"I am woman hear me draw" (Judy Horacek, 2002)
Drawing-as-writing is away for me to move beyond words to share my thinking and wondering about the world.
Described by Judy Horacek, the feminist cartoonist who created her, as “Everywoman”, the character I share with you in these black, grey and white sketches is brave, sassy and politically astute who tries to express women’s shared viewpoints and those things we feel strongly about.
Horacek insists that sparse line drawing like cartooning is an incredibly simple medium capable of expressing great complexity about average people like you and me who live, laugh and love in the world, and for creating alternative possibilities for who we might become.
I hope me and “my girl” create a moment where we can begin this imagining together.
